Do you have the light of life?

‘Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”’ — John‬ ‭8‬:‭12‬ ‬

‘I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun – not because I can see it, but because by it I can see everything else.’ — C.S. Lewis

All around us, we can see that physical light gives life to physical things.

From the smallest of plants, to the biggest of animals, to every human being: God has made so much of our world to be reliant on light. It was the first thing He made in the beginning, and it sustains all of life.

But there's another kind of light that we can't see—a light that we need more than anything else: spiritual light.

Once, we had it. Our hearts saw God, ourselves and the world around us rightly.

But then we looked for life outside of God, and nothing was ever the same again. Sin shrouded our hearts in darkness, we lost sight of our God, and we were left to stumble around in the shadows of our own making.

Since then, we've tried to find our way back to truth, to meaning, to the Maker of our hearts. But even from the summits of our greatest 'enlightenments'—our best ideas and cleverest philosophies—we're no closer to discovering the true spiritual light we need to revive our lifeless hearts.

But while we lost sight of God, He never lost sight of us.

In an astonishing move of mercy, He Himself stepped down into our darkness. Jesus, the Source of true spiritual light, lit up the way back to the Father for anyone who would follow Him—those whose hearts were stirred by His Spirit to run out of the shadows of sin and into the light of His life.

And, if we have been made one with Jesus, we now reflect His light back into the world we were once lost in, so that others might see Him, run to Him, and find life in Him.

Jesus is the only light that gives true life to our hearts.

Run to Him, rejoice in Him, and reflect His light to those around you today.

Love,
Theo

This week’s Journal is an excerpt from our One Year Devotional, featuring 365 reflections to help lift your eyes to Jesus each day of the year. We loved writing it—we read it as a team every morning in our offices, and it’s a huge honour knowing that people are reading it each day, too! You can find out more and get your copy here.
