Where to find endless treasures
‘Though I am the least deserving of all God’s people, he graciously gave me the privilege of telling the Gentiles about the endless treasures available to them in Christ.’ — Ephesians 3:8
‘The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One.’ — A.W. Tozer
If you had the unexpected joy of someone asking you to summarise the gospel for them, what would you say?
For me, I’d probably go down the well-trodden route of creation, fall, redemption and restoration: In love, God made us; because of sin, we rejected God; in love, God sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from our sin; by grace and through faith in Him, we are reconciled to God, who will come back to make all things new and live with us forever.
Or something like that.
But the other day, I came across how Paul summarises the gospel in his letter to the Ephesian church:
The endless treasures available in Christ.
Wow.
If I’m honest, I don't think I usually see Jesus as my ever-available source of endless treasures.
But I think if I did—if we all saw Him that way—it would be life-changing.
What kind of endless treasures do we find in Jesus?
We find the One who has brought us back into God’s family, gives us unrestricted access to the Father, and shares His inheritance with us (Ephesians 1:5; Ephesians 2:18; 2 Corinthians 5:18–19).
We find the One who lives in us as we live in Him, filling us with His life, love, joy, peace and power (John 15:1–8).
We find the One in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found (Colossians 2:3).
We find the One who will never abandon us (John 14:8).
We find the One who comforts and strengthens us to keep going through life’s challenges (Psalm 23).
We find the One who is always praying for us before the Father (Romans 8:34).
We find the One who adores us with an infinite love so vast that we will never, ever exhaust it (Ephesians 3:17–19).
We find the One who is making all things new, and who will soon come back to our world to be with us forever (Revelation 21:5; 22:12).
Jesus really is the greatest treasure. He is so much more than just an add-on, or a free ticket to Heaven, or a good teacher who once said some wise things to help us live a more fulfilling life.
He is everything we could possibly desire. When we delight in Him, He gladly gives us what our hearts want most—Himself.
I don’t want to spend my days settling for anything less than Him.
Like Paul, I want to count everything else as trash compared with the sheer wonder of knowing Jesus, and enjoying all the endless treasures that can only be found in Him (Philippians 3:8–9).
That’s the best news anyone could hope to hear—and I want to tell more people, so they can discover for themselves the endless treasures that are available in Jesus.
Who’s with me?
Love,
Theo
